思索と試作の往復から、まだ見ぬ可能性を探る
福井を拠点に、プロダクトデザインを軸として活動しています。製品の形だけでなく、素材や技術、ものの作られ方や使われ方、その背景にある文化や社会、環境への影響まで視野に入れ、まだ見えていない可能性を探ることに関心があります。
仕事では、まだ何が重要なのかもはっきりしない段階から、対象の中へ手探りで入っていきます。複雑さを急いで単純化せず、調べ、触れ、話を聞き、作って試し、起きたことを観察する。異なる条件や矛盾、予想外の結果を一つずつ咀嚼しながら、対象への解像度を上げていきます。その過程で、当初考えていた答えだけでなく、問いそのものが変わることもあります。得られた結果から問いを立て直し、また試す。そうした思索と試作の往復から、その対象だからこそ成立する形や方法を探していきます。
依頼された製品の造形や設計だけでなく、「この技術を何に使えるのか」「この素材だからこそできることは何か」「そもそも何を作るべきなのか」といった、まだ輪郭の定まっていない段階からの開発にも取り組んでいます。リサーチ、企画、試作、設計、実装まで、必要に応じて範囲を広げながら考えます。
こうした探索の対象は、プロダクトデザインに限りません。近年は絶滅危惧植物サルコカウロンの栽培研究を続け、生育環境を一つずつ検証し直すことで、従来の数十倍相当の成長速度を実現する実生栽培法を確立しました。製品、素材、技術、生物と対象が変わっても、対象を深く理解し、そこから新しい方法を見つけ、実際に成立するところまで確かめるという姿勢は共通しています。

Exploring unseen possibilities through reflection and prototyping
Based in Fukui, Japan, I work primarily in product design. My interests extend beyond the form of products to materials and technologies, how things are made and used, and the cultural, social, and environmental contexts that surround them. I am particularly interested in discovering possibilities that have yet to become visible.
My work often begins at a stage when it is not yet clear what really matters. Rather than simplifying a complex situation too quickly, I enter it tentatively and explore it from within: researching, handling materials, talking with people, making, testing, and observing what happens. By working through conflicting conditions, contradictions, and unexpected results one by one, I gradually develop a more detailed understanding of the subject.
During this process, not only the answer but the question itself may change. I reconsider the question in light of what I have learned, test again, and repeat. Through this back-and-forth between reflection and prototyping, I look for forms and methods that could only emerge from the particular conditions of the subject.
My work therefore goes beyond the styling and design of products. I also take on projects at an earlier and less defined stage, asking questions such as: “What could this technology be used for?”, “What becomes possible because of this particular material?”, or even “What should we be making in the first place?” Depending on the project, I work across research, concept development, prototyping, design, and implementation.
This mode of exploration is not limited to product design. In recent years, I have also been researching the cultivation of the endangered plant genus Sarcocaulon. By systematically re-examining its growing conditions, I established a seed-grown cultivation method capable of achieving growth rates equivalent to several tens of times those of conventional cultivation. Whether the subject is a product, material, technology, or living organism, my approach remains the same: understand it deeply, discover new possibilities within it, and test those possibilities until they work in practice.
